A Brief Explanation of Encaustic Wax Process

Encaustic painting uses molten beeswax and damar resin, combined with pigments, to build up multiple layers fused with heat. This ancient art of using beeswax and pigment can be traced back thousands of years and was used in Greek portrait paintings.  I combine encaustic medium, pigment, oil sticks, ink, paper, pan pastels, silk organza and muslin in my work.   Pieces can have from 10 to 50 layers of beeswax.  The beeswax, pigment and resin are heated to 200 degrees F and quickly applied to a rigid support.  A heating element is used to reheat the surface to fuse each layer to the next creating a rich luminosity and depth of field that is unique to encaustic art.   This ancient art form has been reintroduced over the last 30 years with modern products, tools and techniques.
